HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital supports Harmony Playground

(EFFINGHAM, IL) - HSHS St. Anthony’s continues to support area efforts to enhance the health of community residents. Recently, St. Anthony’s contributed $10,000 to help build the Harmony Playground, an all-inclusive playground that is accessible to all children, adults, and veterans including those with disabilities and special needs.

Along with All Inclusive Rec, the Effingham Park District is conducting a fundraising campaign to raise $700,000 to build the playground.  They are halfway to their goal for the playground, with expectations for construction in fall 2017.

The location of Harmony Playground will be adjacent to the Richard E. Workman Sports and Wellness Complex, where St. Anthony’s Physical Rehabilitation and Wellness is located.  The close location of the playground will allow occupational therapists to use the specially designed playground area for their pediatric patients, as it accommodates children with a broad range of physical and cognitive abilities. This donation is part of St. Anthony’s continued efforts to grow our therapy program at the Workman Sports Complex.

One of those who will benefit from the Harmony Playground is Elizabeth Hastings and her daughter Adelaide.  Adelaide is three years old and has Cerebral Palsy, and receives occupational and physical therapy from St. Anthony’s therapists at the Workman Sports Complex.  Elizabeth, who is a big supporter of the Harmony Playground project, shared how excited she and her daughter are about the playground. “Adelaide needs assistance in all that she does and is unable to play at a regular playground.  She LOVES being outside and loves to swing,” she shared. “Having this playground means that she will be able to play and interact with other kids of all abilities.  She will also get to enjoy playing on equipment that is safe for her and easy for us to enjoy with her.  I am personally so grateful to the hospital for this donation.”
